You can change the world by changing your trip to school!
Term 3 TS…Continue
The TS team doesn't always give prizes to students who come to school by walking or riding. We want to encourage students to do this anyway because it is healthy for them and the environment.
Once a term we do use prizes that are related to being TravelSmart, like helmets and umbrellas. World Car Free Day was the event this term that we included prizes.
We hand out raffle tickets as the students arrive at school. The photos show the first, second and third prizes we gave…Continue
On Friday 19 September a film crew from TravelSmart, at the Department of Transport, came to our school to film Fume Free Friday in action. First, we were filmed handing out stickers, badges and tattoos to TravelSmart students as they arrived at school, and then we were shot holding a TravelSmart meeting. Finally we were"talking heads", telling the audience something about how TravelSmart works at our school. We felt nervous talking to the camera but it was great fun to be involved. …Continue
World Car Free Day was a great success! Students were very excited about receiving raffle tickets as they arrived at school by walking or riding their bikes or scooters. After the students were in class we selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, eight winners in each category, and then drew the winning tickets. We announced over the PA that winning tickets numbers were listed on classroom doors and that prizes could be collected at recess. Prizes included helmets and other bike equipment like…Continue
Although we woke to grey skies and rain, the TravelSmart passion kicked in and we decided to celebrate World Car Free Day as planned, with a walk to Great Southern Grammar.
As eight o'clock rolled around, the clouds parted, the sun shone through and the walkers and riders hit the new section of the dual-use path to our school! Oyster Harbour was looking a little windswept this morning, with white-capped, choppy waves, but the blue skies and green of the forest made it another…Continue
Last year we successfully applied for the Connecting Schools grant to update our very old, boring and rusty bike racks. They are now super bright with plenty of space for bikes, scooters and skate boards.
Over the last few weeks I have had a special bonus prize draw for the students using the new facilities on our usual "Walk, Ride, Scoot or Skate to School Wednesdays". Nothing like a bit of bribery to encourage the kids! Even now though, after the prizes have been drawn and the…
Hi. We are members of the Travel Smart team.
Hopefully in week 3/4 of term 4 we will have an incursion with Transperth.
We are hoping when they come along they bring application forms for Smart Riders…Continue
It's a bit of a late first post but here we go..
We have joined the ranks of Travel Smart schools and I am glad to have had the chance to chat with Emma and Ryan with the afternoon PD that we had. I have briefed our Principal on the Travel Smart program and she is very excited to get our school involved. We are very much looking for a steady and sustainable approach making sure that the initiatives we put in place will last for years to come and…Continue
Poor weather has really given Southwell Primary school the blues when it comes to walking or riding to school.
We are definitely getting back into things next term starting with a walk to school day within the first couple of weeks of Term Four.
We are hoping to also find a way to get ourselves a sheltered lockable bike rack for the students to park their assorted travelling vehicles very soon.
Bring on the lovely Spring weather.
We have adapted the Travel Survey from TravelSmart to School "How to do it!" - "5 Steps" - "Parent Survey (example)"…Continue
The kids were stoked to see the sign up recognising not only the kids on the WSB but also the students that cycle, scoot and walk themselves.
Big thanks to Emma for organising the sign for us…Continue
Eight travelsmart students from Coolbinia Primary School are going to be filmed in a video to promote coming to school in a travelsmart way. At Coolbinia Primary School we hold Fume Free Friday every Friday and sometimes hand out prizes such as stickers and badges. We are celebrating World Car Free Day by doing a raffle draw for the people who come to school in a travelsmart way. There will be great prizes for this event.
Isaac, Nicholas, Jack, Charlotte, Felicity, Sophie, Aleshia,…Continue
A lovely map of the South Perth area showing walking and cycling paths can be seen here http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/activetransport/26081.asp
I like the feature that shows you how far you can walk or ride in 12 minutes. Very interesting!
This could also be useful for non-residents who are visiting the zoo or river, or maybe looking for parking, walking or cycling for events…Continue
Recently we posted a blog about our Winter Warm-up Competition and we are answering some questions we have been asked.
We are promoting the competition by putting a piece in the school newsletter together with TravelWise. The TravelSmart Team has made some posters to promote the competition for the whole school.
Also, the TravelSmart Team has gone around to the classes and informed all of the children about their appropriate year level competition.
To showcase the…Continue
Schools across the globe are starting TravelSmart to School schemes to not only do their bit for the environment but also to teach the curriculum in a fun, active way.
Every time a child is driven to primary school and back their car releases about 84 balloons worth of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This could be reduced dramatically if parents left their cars at home and students simply walked,…Continue
